Arthur I. Gilbert, M.D.
Arthur I. Gilbert, M.D., founder of The Hernia Institute of Florida, is a lifelong resident of Dade County.  He graduated from Miami Beach High School, attended Tulane University in New Orleans, and  received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine.

After an internship at Albany Hospital in New York, a residency in general surgery at the University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, Dr. Gilbert opened a private surgical practice. He grew increasingly interested in the problems caused by hernias and he began to limit his practice to hernias. He is one of a few surgeons in the world to do so.

Since that time he has repaired more than 22,000 hernias. In 1995 he was President of the Florida Surgical Society and in 1997 became the founding President of the American Hernia Society. He developed a classification of hernias that is widely used in the world, and developed  special repair techniques that are being used by surgeons everywhere. Surgeons from around the country and the world to attend the “Advanced Herniorrahphy” Seminars that Dr. Gilbert conducts at the Hernia Institute.

Dr. Gilbert is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, has  served on the South Miami Hospital Board of Governors and has been president of its medical staff. He was South Miami Hospital’s "Person of the Year" in 1995, and is listed in the current edition of "The Best Doctors in America."
Dr. Gilbert has authored numerous articles on herniology, and has lectured at many surgical meetings and medical schools.   He is Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Miami Medical School.
